The best time of day, and why
Three windows come out of that table without my adding anything to it.
- From opening to noon. The park is open from nine and the palace from half past, and you are through the ticket desk before it closes. This is the longest clear run in the day.
- Noon to one is the awkward hour because the ticket office is shut. The automated machines stay available, so it is an inconvenience rather than a closed gate, but if you have a question or a complication it is the worst hour to arrive with it.
- After one, up to the last tickets. The palace stops selling at five and admitting at half past; the park stops selling at half past five and admitting at six, and stays open until seven. Arriving after five means the park only.
The dates that override the time of day
11 November 2026: the site closes at 14:00, last admission 13:00. It is the only dated early closure on the operator’s ticket page, and it turns a full day into a morning.
Until the first quarter of 2027: The roofs are under restoration and there is scaffolding on the building. The operator is working on the roofing and pantry areas until the first quarter of 2027, with scaffolding and temporary protective covering in place, and says the site “will remain open to the public, with all necessary safety conditions ensured”. It is open. But if you have travelled from Lisbon for the façade, you should know before you book rather than at the gate.
Neither of those is a reason to cancel. The first is a reason to come early on one particular day and the second is a reason to know what you are looking at. But somebody choosing a date for the façade rather than for the garden should have both in front of them.
Is Sintra warmer than Lisbon?
People ask, and I am not going to answer it, because this site carries no climate source at all and a sentence from me about the Serra’s microclimate would be an anecdote wearing the clothes of a fact. What I will say is that the question is usually really asking what to bring, and the checkable answer to that is the shape of the visit: this is a park you walk, uphill from the entrance, with the electric transport inside it temporarily unavailable and a paid transfer supplement as the alternative. Dress for a garden rather than for a gallery.
The season, in my own voice and labelled as such
This next paragraph is opinion. I have taken more people round this garden in the rain than round any other in Sintra, and wet weather is when I like the Fern Valley best. That is a preference, not a recommendation with anything behind it, and if you would rather have a dry afternoon you are not wrong. I am putting it here because leaving a page like this with nothing but a timetable on it would be its own kind of dishonesty, and because you can see exactly which parts of this site are measured and which one is me.
Whatever month you pick, buy before you travel. It sidesteps the lunchtime ticket-office closure entirely, and the ticket on the platform costs the same as the ticket at the window — there is nothing to lose by doing it in advance.
