What the building is
The style is Romanticism and Mudéjar Moorish Revival with neo-Gothic elements — Sintra Romanticism. It stands on the remains of the neo-Gothic house Gerard de Visme built over the chapel ruins after renting the farm in 1789; Francis Cook subleased in 1856, bought the property in 1863 and worked with the architect James Knowles on what remained of it, and it became the Cook family’s summer residence. The Portuguese state acquired it in 1949, and the park has sat inside the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 1995. Who built what, and when.
The roof restoration
The roofing and pantry areas are under restoration until the first quarter of 2027, with scaffolding and temporary protective covering on the outside of the building, and the operator says the site “will remain open to the public, with all necessary safety conditions ensured”. The rooms are open throughout, and visitors this summer describe the inside as unaffected. The notice in full.
What it costs to go in
One ticket, and the same ticket covers the park: there is no park-only rate at Monserrate and no palace-only rate either. The tariff is one ticket in four rates.
